An Ongoing Journey
“Forgive as you are forgiven.”*
For the last two weeks, our theme has been “Forgiveness.”
Can one really forgive? It is easier to hold onto past hurts; feeling one has been wronged by getting a lot of mileage out of being offended.
In some situations, forgiveness is elusive and off in the distance; never to be had. The anger and resentment has festered and is now center stage. What happens when we resist to forgive another? Will you feel better by not forgiving?
Are there situations where anger, resentment or un-forgiveness is justified?
Many want to rise up and get even. What does getting even do? One may feel good for one minute, but what about the rest of your life? Is it worth it?
Let’s return to Jesus’ famous words, during those last moments of being fully human. He says: “Forgive them for they know not what they do!” Do I believe those words or does it sound good to recite that passage?
Years ago a friend told me: “We can forgive but not forget. Forgiveness is not for the other person, it’s for you.”
Right now, we stand on the crux of humanity with each holding the fate of one’s true destiny in her/his hands. It is by example and action that one will prevail.
We begin by forgiving those who have trespassed against us, so we are not led into the darkness and loneliness of temptation.
Forgiveness allow us to love ourselves in order to receive the promise of healing and life eternal.
“No more anger. No more pain. I just want to be whole again.”*
